The Ephebe and Male Youth as Subject Matter in Academic Art

I went back into my extensive files of academic works and culled out the works specifically using the nude male youth and ephebe as subject matter. As I have mentioned in a prior posting there is good historical reason for the huge number of works out there. I will keep looking for examples of female nudes in the same age group but as I have said before, those are very rare and command a premium when you find them. I want you to pay attention to several reoccurring themes endemic to this time period and the "Cult of the Ephebe:" (a) bathing boys and (b) Young Saint John the Baptist. We will explore these themes and others in a later post.
