Victor Petit (1817-1871): Nude Male Portrait - 1866

                                                                                  *
A seller on eBay France has recently listed an "attic find" oils on canvas of a sitting male nude portrait by the French artist Victor Petit (1817-1871). Petit was trained by his father and later studied under Simon Fort, a noted landscape and battle scene painter, in Paris and exhibited his works at the Paris Salon from 1837 to 1863. Petit was best known for his lithographs of mountain views and architectural drawings. The painting is signed and dated 1866.

Unknown Artist - French School: Standing Nude Ephebe (Early to Mid-19th Century)

                                                                                  *
Here's another one I lost out on. The bidding got a little too rich for my depleted reserves at the end of the auction. It ended at 590,00 Euros ($800.00). I figured it would top out at or below the 500,00 Euro mark but was surprised when it went well above that mark. It is unsigned and dates from the early to mid-19th century.

Eduard Veith ( 1856 - 1925): Crucifixion Study - Male Nude - Circa 1880

                                                                                 *
This morning I found another nude study by Eduard Veith (1856-1925) and since it was affordable I bought it for my collection. It is obviously a crucifixion study although it was described as "MĂ„NNERAKT MIT ERHOBENEN ARMEN" (Male nude with raised arms). It dates circa 1880.

Eduard Veith ( 1856 - 1925): Mutter mit Kind - 1880-1890

                                                                               *
I was browsing my usual haunts this morning and I ran across this beautiful study of a mother and child by Eduard Veith (1856-1925). It dates from the period 1880-1890. The superimposed scale lines indicate it was a working drawing perhaps to be scaled up for a painting or mural. If you want more information on the artist just search his name above. Although a simple study in pencil with white highlights, it shows the strength and talent of that artistic hand.

Unknown Artists - 19th Century Corpus Christi

*
I have managed to acquire three very nice 18th to 19th century sculptures of the Corpus Christi figure from European sources, one nearly complete museum quality corpus in ox bone (directly below), one in ivory,(second listing below), and one, slightly damaged with a missing limb, also in ox bone (last illustrations). The ability of these unknown 18th-19th century artisans/craftsmen (they were not considered artists) who created these beautiful sculptural representations of the male form on such a small scale just takes my breath away.
