Arthur Brusenbach (1881-1957): Schlafender Männlicher Akt (Reclining Male Nude)

                                                                            *
This morning when I started my usual rounds on the European eBay sites I came upon this beautiful male nude by Arthur Brusenbach (1881-1957). Since it had a "Grab-it-Now" feature on the auction, I did just that. So this beautiful composition will be making its way into my collection. I also pulled up some biographic information on the artist as follows:

"Arthur Brusenbach began his artistic career as a decoration painter for the theatres of the province Siebenbuergen (today part of Romania). He studied for two years at the Vienna School of Applied Arts and then at the Vienna Art Academy under R.Jettmar and R.Bacher (1910-15; 1918-20). As a soldier in the World War I he was captured by the Russians and sent to Siberia, but he managed to escape and came back to Vienna in 1918, where he became a member of the Vienna "Secession" in 1920 and a member of the artist union and exhibition group "Wiener Kuenstlerhaus" in 1939." A gallery in Vienna has listed another of those Eduard Veith pencil sketches. I never tire of his talent and this is yet another example of his expertise. Enjoy.

Melina Eudoxie Daviau (1862-1941): Male Nude Studies

                                                                                     *
The same seller in Paris has also listed the academic male nude studies by the well listed French artist Melina Eudoxie Daviau *1862-1941). Daviau was a French designer, landscape, and portrait artist. He exhibited at the Salon des Artists Francais, Paris, in 1906. He was a pupil of Luc-Olivier Merson (1804-1889) who taught at the Academie des Beaux-arts and was most famous for his postage stamp and currency designs. Merson also has stained glass windows he designed here in the United states. If you search his name in the search block above you will find the three drawings I have in my collection.

Eduard Veith ( 1856 - 1925): Pencil Study of a Nude Boy - Circa 1880

                                                                                     *
I had a few minutes this morning and I thought I would scan that Veith pencil drawing I received last week and post it for you. It is just a quick pencil study, a few expressive lines on paper, and yet it is just something a little more. To my eye it illustrates that expressive hand-eye co-ordination of a classically trained 19th century artist.

Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld (1794 - 1872): Nude Boy - 1823

                                                                              *
Van Ham Kunstauktionen, Koln, DE has listed a nice drawing of a nude boy by the well known German artist Julius Schnorr von Carolsfeld (1794-1872) in their current auction catalog. He was a talented draftsman, engraver, and painter who figured importantly in the 19th century German Nazarene movement. In 1818 he traveled to Rome where he was associated with a group of painters who called themselves the Nazarenes, or Lucas Brotherhood (Lukasbund). Inspired by early Renaissance Art and the works of Albrecht Dürer. Schnorr’s oil paintings were characterized by a precise linearity, clear bright colors, and a multiplicity of symbolic detail. He shared his fellow Nazarenes’ interest in a revival of fresco painting and the creation of a “monumental art.” Schnorr left Rome and settled in Munich in 1827, where he served King Ludwig I, transplanting to Germany the art of wall painting he mastered in Italy.

Two auction houses in Germany are currently listing works by Ludwig von Hofmann (1861-1945). Villa Grisebach Auktionen, Berlin, has listed an oils on paper study of a standing nude boy (Stehender Junglingsakt) which dates from the 1890's and Ketterer Kunst has listed another of those beautiful pastels by Hofmann titled Badende Jungen (Bathing Youths) which is dated 1915. Enjoy.
