Figurative Bronzes and Sculptures at Auction .......... June 2021

 

There have been a number of beautiful bronzes up for auction this month (At some very expensive asking prices). I thought I would share some of the more notable examples with you:

Jules Marie Auguste Leroux (1871-1954) Academic Drawings circa 1911

A French Gallery has listed a number of academic drawings (with a stiff price tag) by Auguste Leroux (1871-1954) from the time period of 1911.   Jules Marie Auguste Leroux (1871-1954) was a French painter and illustrator. His brother Georges Paull Leroux (1877-1957) was also a talented artist who won the Prix de Rome in painting in1906 and was a member of the Academie des Beaux-Arts. He entered the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in 1892 where he studied in the studio of Leon Bonnat (1833-1922). Leroux later gained success as an illustrator of books. As a skilled lithographer, he worked with some of the greatest engravers of his time. His first works were full of symbolism and art nouveau combined with references to mythology and allegorical subjects. His later works show greater academic rigor. BENIZIT Dictionary of Artists - English Language Edition (14 Volumes) 2006

When you sit and pontificate about your art collection it is always nice to have the ultimate resource at hand to establish some form of bona fides. Lately it has been a chore finding biographical and educational information about an artist whose work you have added to your collection from internet resources. With some 170,000 entries on the world's artists this little addition to my library may prove to be a very valuable time saving resource. Apparently this set is the first English Language edition of the most recent French edition of this valuable resource.... and it is on it's way from Germany of all places. Believe it or not it was less expensive having it shipped from Germany than buying the same set here in the US... go figure. Let's hope I can now add credible detailed information about an artist without hours of scouring the internet empty handed.
