I was browsing on eBay Germany this morning and ran across a Ferdinand Liebermann (1883-1941)(not to be confused with the famous German Painter Max Liebermann (1847-1935) Rosenthal ceramic figure titled Capricorn. I have always had a soft spot for Ferdinand Liebermann's figural works because they always seem to have an element of humor built into them. Liebermann was active during the Jugendstil Period (1890-1905) in Germany. The German word Jugendstil was coined for the "youth style" popularized in the magazine Jugend. The movement was highly influenced by Czech artist Alphonse Mucha. It was a popular style in Europe but its influence was International, especially in the decorative arts. Ferdinand Liebermann studied at the Munich Art School and Academy. He received outstanding recognition for his works. He did monumental sculptures during the German Nazi period, including a bust of Hitler, also. His public works included sculpture, monuments, and fountains.
