Jean-Baptiste Lucien After Jacques SALY 1717-1776: Crayon Manner Print - Standing Male Nuide

                                                                           *
I have had my collecting eye on a very nice standing male nude crayon manner print listed on eBay France for several months now. The seller stated in the listing that he would not ship the print outside France on this particular print. So, I sat back and admired it thinking I would not be able to add it to my collection. Well yesterday I had had enough of just watching it sit there. I finally figured "nothing ventured, nothing gained" and contacted the seller. He sold me the print and it should be heading my way in a week or two. For those of you not familiar with the printing technique of the "crayon manner" or "chalk manner" print. I pulled up a brief description for the National Gallery website in Washington, D.C.........

"Chalk manner (also called crayon manner) is a printmaking technique that imitates the appearance of chalk lines. Chalk-manner prints were made in as many as three colors--black, red, and white--from one or more copperplates worked either in etching or engraving, or in a combination of the two. Special toothed tools--roulettes, mattoirs (punches), champignons (literally, "mushrooms"), and the like--were used to create dotted patterns on the plate that suggest the grainy appearance of chalk strokes on paper".

The seller also had another print and I have included it at the bottom of this post.

Hermann Hanaczek (1873-?): Standing Male Nude - Circa Late 19th Century

                                                                           *
I was cruising my regular haunts this morning and found a very nice quality male nude by Hermann Hanaczek (1873-?). It was reasonably priced and I bought it for my collection. The Gallery also had another male nude but I could afford only one so I chose what I considered technically the best. Unfortunately there is scant biographical information on Hanaczek other than a notation I found that he was "active in NY."

Thomas Stindel (1887-1971): Death and the Maiden - Circa 1920

                                                                            *
A Gallery in Vienna has listed a pastel by the Austrian artist Thomas Stindel (1887-1971) which I thought I would share with you. Stindel was a winner of the Rome Prize and his talent shines through in this beautiful rendition of a Symbolist favorite subject, Death and the Maiden. The city of Vienna honored his talent with an honorary award in 1927. Enjoy.
