Unknown Early 19th Century German Artist: Johannesknabe (Young St. John the Baptist) ca. 1800

*
This morning a German Auction House put this beautiful 19th Century painting in their current catalog. I thought I would post it separately since it would get lost in the many postings I will be making shortly regarding the Fall/Winter Auction season. The depiction of young St. John is an iconographic image you see repeated throughout the history of western art. I would love to join the bidding but the auction house insists it is too large to ship to the states (it is smaller than the last painting I had shipped from Europe.... go figure). I will keep nagging them and perhaps they can sort out the details. Regardless, it is a beautiful depiction of the young saint.
