Figurative Nudes - Bronzes, Drawings and Paintings

I have been at work digging up more beautiful figurative works for you. Most of these are from retail Galleries and a few are in public or private collections. Just a short note about the drawing directly below. What a shame that beautiful work of art was neglected so badly but the good news is with enough money and a little time it could be restored by a good paper conservationist. The drawing is part of the Cohen Library Archives and Special Collections, CCNY, New York, N.Y. The description indicated it is a lithograph but I suspect it is an original academic drawing. That model youth is the very definition of the Greek ideal of "the Ephebe", that mystical existence between man and boy, including that cherished of all ancient male Greek possessions: the "akroposthion."

19th Century French School - Male Nude - Oils On Canvas - Example of "General to Specific"

This beautiful male nude study appeared on eBay France this morning. The second I saw it I had the impression of two very distinct things: (1) it was a timed pose and (2) it illustrated the teaching method of "general to specific". The "timed" assumption comes from the fact that is not completed although the parts that are finished are specific. The artist obviously had a good command of his drawing skills and very nice command of color within that application. The "general to specific" part comes from a comparison of the top half of the painting with the bottom half of the painting. That generalized pencil drawing at the bottom has morphed into the beautiful brush work and color application on the upper half of the body. A fine example of what your painting instructor tried to pound into you in painting class: think "general to specific."

Alfred Hofmann (1879-1958) Sitting Female Nude (Terra cotta) 1923

I just managed to take at auction this beautiful terra cotta female nude sculpture on eBay Austria. I was very excited about adding it to my collection since I have so few examples of good female nudes in the collection. It appears to be in excellent condition and will make a great addition to the collection. Years ago I ran across this sculpture in an Antiques shop in Amsterdam but passed it up because it was too bulky to carry back on the plane. I always kept it in the back of my mind and swore if I ever ran across another example I would buy it.

Alfred Hofmann (1879-1958) was a well know Austrian sculptor who did a lot of medals and numismatic designs.
