This very delicate pencil drawing came from Vienna and into my collection several years ago. Unfortunately, it is not signed nor dated but originates from a 19th century Austrian Art Academy in the latter part of the 19th century. It obviously has religious overtones (the deposition of Christ, perhaps, the descent from the cross?) but it is also a very nice academic study of the male form. The detail is quite exact and the entire figure is very nicely handled. In the close up views notice how each pencil mark follows the contours of the form. There are literally thousands of these marks across the entire landscape of the musculature. I doubt I would have the patience to execute that kind of detail (ADD being my calling card!). Enjoy.
