I was rummaging around in the print cabinet looking for a screw driver this morning and found these two works hiding in a folder. I am always on the lookout for "different and mildly erotic" works and these two works fit that bill. I thought I would post them as a temporary change of topic for you. The Franz Kuna drawing came from our friends at Wilnitsky Gallery in Vienna and just cracked me up when I saw it. If you read the drawing from right to left you will easily follow the action. The poor guy on the far left is fully sated and the customer entering the madam's establishment is just getting started according to the bulge in his toga. Kuna was a well known Austrian/Czech artist who worked in Vienna during the first part of the 20th century. The second work is an intaglio print from a European artist by the name of Hansjorg Singer (?). Unfortunately, I have been unable to find any credible biographic information on him but his work is most unusual, to say the least. This came from a German seller who had a few examples of Singer's erotic prints and the thing that got my attention on this print was the highly unusual subject matter. Everyone has heard the Fairy tale of Hansel and Gretel but I'll wager you have never heard (or seen in this case) the true story.... that is, according to Singer. F. Kogelmann: Academic Male Nude - December 1881

This morning I managed to pick up this nicely executed Academic Male Nude on one of the European eBay sites. Unfortunately, I have been unable to find any biographic information on the artist. Still, it is a nice drawing of a well proportioned and handsome male model. I am encouraged to see that the old requirement of head at the top and feet at the bottom requirement of executing the full page nude is still followed today as it was in 1881. None of this full figure in the center of the paper stuff some students try to get away with. My drawing instructor said that if he saw paddles for feet and hands he would stand on the drawing and make us do it again. ------------------------------------------------- Caption: Male Nude Artist: F. Sculptural Nudes in My Collection: Kai Nielson's Drunken Silenus, Nude Young Bacchus, Nude Youth With Flute

Several years ago I was very fortunate enough to obtain an example of Kai Nielson's (1882-1924) Bing and Grondahl's 1912 edition of the Drunken Silenus (photos are the last entry in this post). Nielson's sculptures of this series on drunkeness are some of my favorites. I love these beautiful depictions of Silenus, reminds me of myself when I was enjoying the nector of the Merry Maids of France. Kai Nielson (1882-1924) was a famous Danish sculptor who trained at the Konelige Danske Kunstakademi in Copenhagen from 1902 to 1906 and again in 1912. He took inspiration from the works of Auguste Rodin and Constantin Meunier. The beautiful spring weather here is still in full swing. I have put down 250 lbs. of fertilizer and have trimmed hedges until I am beginning to look like a hedge. The honeysuckle is in full bloom and perfumes the entire yard. My resident hummingbirds are in hummingbird heaven. I still have a ton of work to do in the yard before I come inside when the heat and humidity of northern Florida take over so stay with me.

This beautiful Herend figure has a production date of 1941 but the design predates the production date. The Herend factory in Hungary dates from 1826 and holds Queens and Kings amongst its clientele. It is now the largest porcelain factory in Europe.

Drunken Silenus:

Meet Drunken Silenus..... the great Roman god Bacchus' drinking buddy. In fact Silenus taught Bacchus the fine art of the consumption of wine. Many people confuse Silenus with Bacchus, but alas he is not the great god. This porcelain figure comes from a series portraying mythological personages. It dates from around 1900 and is my favorite. In Greek mythology, Silenus was a part bestial and part human creature of the forest and mountains. He was part of Dionysus' (Bacchus) entourage. The sileni are most usually represented as aged satyrs ---- drunken, jolly, fat, bald, beared, and possessing the ears of a donkey. According to some myths they were prophets but according to other sources they were so stupefied with drink that they were unable to distinguish truth from falsehood (think modern day politicians, especially of the Marxist-Democrat Party variety). Silenus was described as the oldest of the satyrs, the son of Hermes or Pan. He was the companion, advisor , and tutor of Dionysus (Bacchus). King Midas returned him to Bacchus after he got lost and earned that fateful wish of the golden touch. Silenus shared with the King a pessimistic philosophy:

"That the best thing for a man is not to be born, and if already born, to die as soon as possible."

I apologize for the delay in posting. I have been having problems with my right hip and it gets somewhat painful sitting here at the computer for hours unless I get up and move around, anyway, it's Spring here and the Azelias are in full bloom, tons of pollen in the air, and the lawn needs attention. I have a batch of new auction finds that I am sorting through and I will post them as soon as I get many of the images stitched together, which takes time. I also have a nice collection of Ephebe images like the one above that I have to sort through, so be of good cheer.
