Monogrammist "N.G." - Faun and Bacchants - Dated 1874

I just added this late 19th century drawing to my collection. It is signed "N.G." and dated 1874. It is most probably a drawing from the antique but still a whimsical work, one of my favorite subject matters.

Vratislav Nechleba (1885-1965): Academic Male Nude - 1905

Auktionshaus Michael Zeller, Lindau, DE has listed this beautifully executed male nude in their current auction catalog. Vratislav Nechleba (1885-1965) studied at the Prague Academy and took several study trips to Italy and Germany. From 1918 on he assumed a position as professor of art instruction at the Prague Academy. This beautiful work is signed and dated "1905."

Hermann Moest (1868 - 1945): Männerakt (Male Nude)

Well, you win some and you lose some. Fortunately I managed to win one of the two beautifully executed Hermann Moest (1868-1945) male nudes listed on eBay Austria today. I was outbid on the one I missed by one stupid Euro.

Hermann Moest was the son and pupil of the sculptor Karl Friedrich Moest (1838-1923). From 1885 to 1888 he was also a student at the Academy of Karlsruhe, and from 1890 to 1894 he studied under Sandor Liezen-Mayer at the Academy of Munich. Later on he lived in Berlin, where he became a well known figure painter and illustrator.

Monogrammist L.T. - Unknown German School: Sitting Male Nude - 1879

This beautifully executed academic male nude study is presently listed on eBay Germany. It is monogrammed with the initials "L.T." and dated 1879 (?). The control and talent of this unknown artist is just breathtaking.

Late 19th Century Parisian Atelier: Seated Male Nude

One of my favorite sellers in Paris has listed this beautifully executed academic male nude on eBay France. It dates from the later 19th century and attributes it to the Parisian Atelier Adolph von Menzel. The color palette and brush work are truly impressive.

Unknown Artist - Vienna Academy: Line Drawing - Female Nude around 1919

I must apologize for being remiss in my posting lately but with summer here there is more work around here than I like to think about. I have a boat load of finds to post for you so please be patient. I was on my usual haunts this morning and this beautiful line drawing popped up and I just had to share it with you. It is unsigned and originates from the Wiener Kunstgewerbeschule around 1919. It is a beautiful example of the skills coming out of the late 19th century European Academy.

Ludwig von Hoffman (1861-1945): Junge in Einer Felslandschaft (Boy in Rocky Landscape)

These seldom seen works by Ludwin von Hoffman (1861-1945) keep popping up occasionally in European Auction Houses, this time in the current catalog of Villa Grisebach Auktionen, Berlin, DE. I do not recall ever seeing this one in books on his works, still a nicely executed study of a male youth in landscape. If you have an extra six thousand Euros to get the bidding war going you might want to throw your name in the pot.
