Erich Albert Lamm (Austrian, 1880–1934) - Intaglio Print - Pferde Krieger männlicher Akt Gruppe - 1912

I was on eBay Germany several days ago when I spotted what had to be the work of a very talented classically trained, late 19th - early 20th century artist. The listing only identified the artist as (?) Lamm. The starting price was ridiculously low and I watched the auction and programmed a bid that I thought would easily take the print and ended up as the new owner. Apparently the seller could not make out the artist’s first name so I enlarged the artist signature and determined that what appeared to be a scribbled, unintelligible first name was actually “Albert.” A little research and I identified the artist as Erich Albert Lamm (1880-1934), an Austrian born artist who was active in Germany during the late 19th - early 20th century.   Lamm was active in Berlin from 1873 to his death in 1934. He initially studied physics and mathematics at the Polytechnic in Berlin and from 1893 to 1895 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts, Darmstadt. There he studied with Eugèn Bracht. From 1899 to 1901 he finished his studies in the Master Class of Professor Otto Dill. The minute I saw this print I knew I had to add it to my collection.  Needless to say, Lamm was a very talented, classically trained artist. Enjoy.

Well I just spent four times what I paid for the print to have it professionally framed and mounted with museum quality materials. I thought this master work deserved the very best for display.

After having the print framed, it is now on the wall and part of the collection...

Ludwig von Hofmann (1861-1945) Standing Nude Male Youth , circa 1910

I think most of you know the works of Ludwig von Hofmann (1861-1945) who started his career at the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts in 1883 and later studied in Paris at the Academy Julian, and whose works are full of nudes. His work was influenced by the works of Pierre Puvis de Chavannes (1824-1898) and Paul-Albert Besnard (1849-1934). After the war his widow managed to keep the majority of his work out of the hands of the Russians when Germany fell in defeat. I have spent my fun money for the next six months to add this von Hofmann to my collection. I just hope my sons realize the value of the gift I will leave them. Based upon the signature I would estimate this work to be in the 1900-1910 time period of his career.

Sunday January 19, 2020

Well these old 74 year old bones are showing their age. Several weeks ago I went into the garage to feed my garage cats, lost my balance and fell on my keister and twisted my right leg. Days later I ended up in the emergency room with muscle spasms that have extremely limited my mobility. Three CAT scans and an MRI confirmed extensive nerve damage to the right leg. Tomorrow we have a nerve block scheduled so please keep me in your thoughts for a speedy recovery. Happy trails.

Gustave Poetzsch (1870-1950) Nude Ephebes - Academic Drawings

GUSTAVE POETZSCH 1870-1950

The following attribution derives from Walker Galleries Fine Art:

“A painter of the Belle Epoque, Gustave Poetzsch was born in 1870 in Neuchâtel, Switzerland where he started to learn painting from a very young age. The local mountains and lakes gave him his initial inspiration.  In 1892 he enrolled at the Julian Academy in Paris.  He entered the School of Fine Art in 1895 and studied under Gustave Moreau along with Henri Matisse, Charles Camoin and Paul de Frick.
In 1896, Poetzch married Marie-Louise Aulagne, a well-known milliner in the Faubourg Saint Honoré. Through her he was introduced to Parisian Society. He travelled to Deauville, the haunt of the haute monde, British aristocrats and American billionaires who enjoyed the casinos, bathing, yachting and golf as well as the jewellers and fashion houses.
In August 1913 Poetzch watched the finish of the Paris-Deauville race for seaplanes, a speed race which was held along the Seine. This vastly popular event was portrayed in several of his paintings. He also painted his wife and friends  on the beach paying close attention to the prevailing fashions. His wife’s clientele  feature as subject matter in his paintings.  From 1895 he exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants, the Salon des Artistes Français and at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts. He also exhibited at the Exposition Universelle in  Paris in 1900.”
Gustave Poetzsch painted contemporary genre, landscapes and still lives. He owned  a house in Yssingeaux in the Haute-Loire where he painted lacemakers and the countryside.. The Museé Carnavalet has a collection of his drawings relating to the defeat of the Germans  in 1944.
A retrospective of his works was held in the Musée des Beaux-Arts in  Neuchâtel in 1950.”

Well, I have managed to get back into the swing of things again. I just bought these two Academic drawings from Poetzsch’s early career. I am guessing from his class studies in Gustav Moreau’s academic studies class. Enjoy:
