This very nice male nude painting on paper mounted on canvas recently appeared on one of the European eBay sites. It is apparently unsigned but is the work of a late 19th century trained artist from some unknown French Academy. The asking price is somewhat pricy and I will have to pass it up, unfortunately. I have had my eye on this small intaglio print for a while and tonight, with the Euro-Dollar exchange rate once again near parity, I decided to buy it. It comes from a seller in France and I assume was originally intended as a prototype menu for some elegant occasion, although it remains a mystery to me as to why that particular male figure has the temerity to expose his derriere on a menu, that is unless his derriere was actually on the menu. (I'm beginning to sound like that dumb Vice-President of the US, Kamala Harris) I can only guess that "bread buns" and "his buns" were not the only thing on the menu. Whimsical to say the least. I was doing my usual stumbling around on the various International Auction sites several days ago when low and behold this little beauty presented itself! My first reaction was a big smile and then a big laugh! Ferdinand Barbedienne (1810-1892) definitely had a sense of humor and had captured the exact moment when everything in a boy's world finally becomes the "center of his universe." Any man or boy on Earth will tell you that there is a very special time in their lives when they discover their "special purpose," how it works, and once found it is.... "Over Niagara Falls in a barrel we go... again and again and again!" Enjoy!
Update : Well I just couldn't resist adding this lusty little guy to my collection. I made an offer and ended up buying this small bronze! He is headed from Germany into my collection!

Dimensions: h. 27.5 cm Ernst Seger was born as the third child of the lawyer and notary Albert Seger and his wife Cäcilie, née Rust in Neurode in the county of Glatz. He attended the sculpture class of the Royal School of Arts and Crafts in Breslau under Robert Härtel from 1884 and worked in the studio of Christian Behrens from 1886. From the late 1880s he received his first major commissions for monuments. After working in Auguste Rodin's studio in Paris in 1893 and 1894, he ran his own studio in Berlin. In 1895 he created an Emperor Wilhelm monument for Glatz. Around 1900 he became popular for his Art Nouveau sculptures, especially female nudes."
